Biography

Overview

Gabriela Lopez Stahl represents and advises companies and sovereign states in international arbitration and mediation. Her practice focuses on investment treaty and commercial arbitration, as well as public international law.

Gabi represents clients in international arbitrations before major arbitral institutions and in ad hoc arbitrations under the UNCITRAL rules.  She has experience in many industries and core sectors, including energy, mining, technology, and industrial and real estate development.

Gabi is a Regional Representative for North America for the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Young Arbitration and ADR Forum.  She is actively involved in California's international arbitration community and in efforts to promote the growth of international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in California.  She is a founding member of California Arbitration (CalArb) and a member of Young CalArb's Steering Committee.

Gabi is a guest lecturer in USC Gould School of Law's externship program.  She also frequently speaks, publishes, and organizes programs on issues of international law and international dispute resolution.  

Before moving to Los Angeles, Gabi practiced for five years in the firm's Washington, DC office.

At Columbia Law School, Gabi was Executive Editor of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law and Editor of the Yearbook on International Investment Law and Policy. She also worked for two years as a Research Assistant to Professor George A. Bermann, Chief Reporter of the Restatement of the Law, The U.S. Law of International Commercial and Investor-State Arbitration.

Experience

Gabriel Resources Ltd. and Gabriel Resources (Jersey) v. Romania
Representing the Canadian mining company Gabriel Resources and its Jersey subsidiary in an ICSID arbitration for US$4.4 billion under Romania’s bilateral investment treaties with Canada and the United Kingdom.

ACF Renewable Energy Limited v. Republic of Bulgaria
Representing the Republic of Bulgaria in an ICSID arbitration under the Energy Charter Treaty relating to an investment in the renewable energy generation sector.

Moti Ramot and Rami Levy v. Republic of Bulgaria
Representing the Republic of Bulgaria in an ICSID arbitration under the Bulgaria-Israel BIT relating to a real estate development project.

Ad hoc arbitration by European investors against a State
Represented a European State in an ad hoc arbitration under the UNCITRAL rules relating to an industrial development project.  The tribunal dismissed all of the investors' claims on jurisdictional grounds.
