Biography

Overview

Tuuli Timonen is a senior associate in the Firm's International Arbitration Practice Group. Before locating to Helsinki, Tuuli worked for several years at White & Case's Paris office and she also spent a year in the Firm's New York office.

Tuuli has represented a variety of clients from diverse industries at different stages of their disputes: from defining dispute resolution strategies and negotiating settlements to conducting arbitration proceedings until the enforcement of the award. Tuuli has experience in international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations, as well as in complex international construction disputes. She has represented clients in proceedings conducted under the ICC Rules, the SCC Rules, ICSID Rules, the FAI Rules as well as in ad hoc arbitrations. More recently Tuuli has been advising clients over dispute avoidance and dispute management related issues at the contract negotiations stage.

Tuuli is the founder and former president of New York University School of Law's International Arbitration Association and a former board member of Young Arbitration Club Finland. Tuuli regularly lectures on international dispute resolution in universities and conferences around Europe. She is also the co-editor of "Arbitration in Finland" (2017) and member of the board of the Arbitration Institute of Finland Chamber of Commerce (2019).

She is actively involved in the international Willem C. Vis Moot Court Competition, acting as a coach and arbitrator in the competition.

Representation of a group of companies in an ICC arbitration regarding tax disputes arising out of an M&A transaction.

Representation of an owner in an ICC arbitration regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant.

Representation of an international energy insurer in an ad hoc arbitration, under the English Arbitration Act, regarding recovery for damage to a coal mine under a property damage insurance policy.

Representation of a Middle Eastern group in an ICC arbitration, conducted in French, with an African state, in connection with public works contracts, as well as enforcement proceedings in numerous jurisdictions worldwide.

Representation of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine in an ICSID arbitration brought by a U.S. investor arising out of issues in the broadcasting sector.
