White & Case London partner Jonah Anderson was recently featured in Law360 discussing the UK government's new anti-money laundering strategy and its potential to increase enforcement activity, including larger and more complex high-end money laundering investigations.
Jonah said that "a properly funded U.K. national financial intelligence service could be transformational, enabling earlier intervention and more effective enforcement. Its success will depend on meaningful private-sector cooperation, which in turn requires greater confidence in government agencies and meaningful use of intelligence."
He also noted that while increased account freezing order activity is likely to continue, the more interesting question will be whether additional enforcement capacity translates into more complex investigations.
