US merger filings more than doubled in 2021

The US antitrust agencies reviewed more than 2.5 times as many transactions in 2021 as they had on average over the past two decades.

In an article for Global Competition Review, the Chair of White & Case's Global Competition Practice, J. Mark Gidley, discusses the Firm's "Shining a Light on the Massive Global Surge in Merger Control Filings" thought leadership survey with senior reporter Ben Remaley. 

The article notes: "Gidley said he thinks 2021 was a historically busy year because of several factors, including low interest rates from the Federal Reserve and possibly companies’ fear that the tax code will be altered in upcoming years."
