Biography

Overview

Ignacio is an associate of the firm's International Arbitration department in the Madrid office. His practice is focused on commercial arbitration subject to the International Chamber of Commerce and the Madrid Court of Arbitration rules involving post-M&A, large infrastructure projects, DAB's construction, and joint investment disputes. He has also experience in investment arbitration, being involved in proceedings under the ICSID and UNCITRAL rules – applying the ECT and various BITs – related to energy, infrastructure, telecommunications, and real estate disputes. Additionally, his experience also includes set aside as well as interim relief proceedings before Spanish local courts.

Experience

He is currently assisting: 

  • A Belgium company in a post-M&A commercial arbitration in the Madrid Court of Arbitration against a Spanish company on the basis of a Share Purchase Agreement. 
  • The Contractor in a proceeding before the International Chamber of Commerce against the Employer, related to the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks Project. 
  • A Spanish telecommunications company in an ICSID arbitration against the Republic of Colombia pursuant to the Spain-Colombia BIT, in a dispute relating to a concession agreement for mobile telephone services (pending).
  • A Japanese investor in an ICSID arbitration against the Kingdom of Spain under the Energy Charter Treaty, in a dispute relating to the investment in a 50 MW CSP plant.

He has assisted: 

  • The Contractor in a proceeding before the project’s Dispute Adjudication Board (DAB) against the Employer, related to the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks Project.
  • A renewable energy fund in an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration arising out of a joint investment agreement for the development of two 150 MW and 140 MW PV projects in Mexico.
  • A sovereign state in a set aside proceeding against a favourable UNCITRAL award, preventing the first annulment attempt of an investment arbitration award before the Spanish courts. 
  • An international physical commodities trader in an interim relief proceeding before the Spanish courts for the attachment of a mineral shipment.
