Biography
Joachim Schmidt is a banking and finance lawyer, specializing in real estate loans, corporate loans and financial restructurings.
He advises banks, insurance companies, pension funds and debt funds as well as institutional investors, private equity houses and housing companies in connection with complex (cross-border) finance transactions.
His expertise particularly includes all legal aspects of national and cross-border real estate financings (including mortgage loans and Pfandbrief financings, senior and mezzanine loans, real estate project finance, portfolio deals, share deals and asset deals, as well as loan sales (especially, non-performing loans)) as well as (cross-border) financial restructurings and workouts of distressed German real estate financings.
Prior to joining White & Case in 2024, he practiced in the Frankfurt office of another international law firm for more than ten years.
Experience
Advised Aareal Bank on its initial financing of a data center, expanding its product portfolio to include a new asset class.
Advised a European banking consortium coordinated by Commerzbank Aktiengesellschaft on the €3 billion refinancing of Vonovia, a major residential holding based in Germany.
Advised a subsidiary of Net Zero Properties (Net Zero), a residential real estate platform based in Luxembourg, on the acquisition and financing of a residential portfolio of approximately 3,300 units from the Zentral Boden Immobilien Group (ZBI).
Advising a German Landesbank on the 1.1bn financing of a building ensemble in Berlin.*
Advising a consortium of three globally operating investment banks as mandated lead arrangers on the ca. EUR 3bn acquisition financing of a real estate portfolio located in Germany by a global private equity investor.*
