Biography

Kate Chapman is a Local Partner in our Doha office.

Qualified in England and Wales and in New York, she specialises in general corporate finance, leveraged finance, real estate finance, project finance and Islamic finance across a range of industries and jurisdictions. Kate has worked in Qatar (for over ten years), the UAE, London and New York, and is fluent in English and Spanish.

Kate has a particular specialism in cross-border real estate financings and she has previously completed a secondment to the special situations structuring desk at Deutsche Bank's Wall Street office in New York, in addition to a secondment as acting General Counsel for a leading GCC bank. Kate has also completed secondments with a Qatari Islamic investment bank and as sole legal advisor for the Middle East office of a major US pharmaceuticals company.

Kate has a passion for pro bono work and has advised Teach for All, ACLU, MiCLU, IGLYO, the World Bank, Hope and Homes for Children, NaTakallam and WWF. Additionally, Kate has mentored several students, including via The Law Society of England and Wales' Diversity Access Scheme and Beleve.

  • Representation of Estithmar Holding on a €150 million SACE facility.
  • Representation of a syndicate of 8 Qatari banks on a conventional and Islamic financing for a development on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast.
  • Representation of Qatar Islamic Bank on a $1 billion dual-tranche unsecured Term Murabaha financing facility arranged by HSBC, SMBC and Standard Chartered.
  • Representation of a Qatari bank on a $225 million facility for a development in the Caribbean.
  • Representation of a major lender on a cross-border €1.2 billion refinancing of a secured Islamic facility.
  • Representation of a French bank on a $175 million financing in respect of an investment in the UK with Qatari sponsors.
  • Representation of a regional borrower on a €300 million syndicated secured financing in respect of a hotel development in Europe.
  • Representation of a sovereign wealth fund on secured conventional and Islamic financings in excess of $3 billion.
  • Representation of the Qatari lenders on a QAR1.14 billion conventional and Islamic financing to a major Qatari retail conglomerate.
  • Representation of a Qatari bank on a GBP100+ million acquisition financing in respect of a UK company.
  • Representation of a Swiss bank on taking security over Qatar listed shares.
  • Representation of a Qatar bank on taking security over a landmark hotel in Central London.
  • Representation of a syndicate of lenders on a QAR3.3 billion real estate development financing in respect of a Westin hotel and commercial complex in Doha, Qatar. *
  • Representation of the Qatari lenders on a GBP800 million refinancing of debt used for the acquisition of Claridge's, The Berkeley and The Connaught in London. *
  • Representation of a major Saudi entity on a USD2.2 billion conventional and Islamic financing. *
  • Representation of BAML and Deutsche Bank in respect of a EUR600 million senior secured term facility for the acquisition of an interest in El Corte Ingles S.A. by a Qatari investor. *
  • Representation of a syndicate of international banks, including HSBC, SMBC and Mizuho, on a USD500 million financing in Qatar. *
  • Representation of a global power company based in Qatar in respect of its USD430 million syndicated financing and USD210 million bilateral financing to finance the acquisition of a power company in Indonesia. *
  • Representation of a major developer in the UAE on an AED200 million financing to finance a theme park and hotel complex in Dubai. *
  • Representation of a major developer in Dubai on an AED 1billion financing to finance a shopping and entertainment complex. *
  • Representation of the joint lead arrangers in connection with a USD3.7 billion debt financing package for Brookfield Business Partners' acquisition of Westinghouse Electric Company, a leading global provider of infrastructure services to the power generation industry. *
  • Representation of a major Bahraini bank in respect of its borrowing of a USD250 million investment grade facility. *
  • Representation of Standard Chartered Bank and First Gulf Bank as mandated lead arrangers on a USD500 million financing for Twin Star Mauritius Holdings, a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources, one of the largest oil & gas and metals majors in India.*
  • Representation of USD275 million secured term loan (Islamic and conventional) in relation to the development of City Walk, Dubai, an urban shopping and entertainment complex (borrower side). *
