Biography

Overview

Mónica focuses her legal practice in Financial Regulatory Services and Data Privacy, and also has ample experience in Intellectual Property.

Before joining White & Case in 2022, Mónica was a member of a prestigious transactional law firm in Mexico City where she had the opportunity to provide advise to several national and international clients on complex financial regulatory matters, as well as on a wide array of M&A transactions mainly from an intellectual property and data privacy standpoint.

Her most recent professional experience has been strongly focused on mergers and acquisitions of various types of financial entities. Monica is counsel to different local and global financial entities, service providers of financial entities, start-ups and other corporations applying for a financial license in Mexico or seeking to acquire a local licensed entity.

She is currently advising Citigroup on the financial regulatory matters related to its restructuring process for the separation of its consumer and institutional banking businesses in Mexico, and recently participated as part of the legal team advising Banregio Grupo Financiero in its corporate restructuring process.

Representative transactions include:

Restructures, 2022 – 2023

  • Currently advising in financial regulatory matters to one of the world's largest financial entities in its corporate restructuring consisting of the separation and potential sale of part of its businesses in Mexico;
  • Currently participating as part of the team advising in the restructure process of a financial group in Mexico;
  • Currently participating as part of the team advising in the authorization process of different financial entities before the Mexican Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV);

M&A transactions, 2017 – 2021*

  • Participated as part of the legal team advising several corporations in M&A transactions with a special focus on intellectual property and data privacy law;
  • Assisted the biggest American events promoter and venue operator in the acquisition of a controlling interest in one of Latin America's leading promoters of live events, venue operator and owner of the biggest ticket distributor in Mexico; and
  • Assisted a Latin American premier partner to global fashion brands, in the acquisition of a leading fashion retail business.

Pro Bono*

  • In intellectual Property and/or Data Privacy matters, Mónica participated in the following:
    • Assisted one of the biggest international non-governmental organization working in the fields of wilderness preservation and reduction of human impact on the environment;
    • Assisted a charity association that supports Mexican women of low economic income who are committed to their personal growth. This association provides psychotherapy sessions and gives them the opportunity to begin/continue with their studies; and
    • Assisted a non-profit civil association that encourages individuals who desire to achieve a more prosperous and productive life, through training and consulting for the creation or improvement of their micro-enterprises and self-employment.
