A first-chair patent trial lawyer in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice, Bill James has three decades of experience representing multinational companies in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and med-tech patent disputes.

Bill is an authority on Hatch-Waxman litigation, having represented clients in first-to-file and multi-defendant brand-versus-generic patent trials. Bill acts as lead counsel in inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and has participated in numerous appeals, including appeals before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the US Supreme Court. He counsels clients on litigation preparation, freedom-to-operate, due diligence, licensing and prosecution matters, as well as global coordination of patent matters. His most recent experience includes representing clients in high-stakes pharmaceutical and biotechnology cases in district court, before the US International Trade Commission, and in arbitration.

Bill is a member of the American Bar Association, the New York Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. He has served in a number of firm-management roles over the course of his career.
