Digital Economy and Competition Law: Digital Platform Regulations in Japan and the United States

We are pleased to announce that White & Case will be hosting a seminar titled "Digital Economy and Competition Law: Digital Platform Regulations in Japan and the United States". Below are the details.

In recent years, issues related to competition law for the digital economy, in particular the regulations on digital platforms, are attracting attention. In countries around the world, including Japan, Europe and the United States, discussions have been held and various points of view shared as to whether digital platforms should be regulated and how they should be regulated while at the same time recognizing innovations, etc. In Japan, on August 29, 2019, the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) published a draft of new "Guidelines Concerning Abuse of a Superior Bargaining Position in Transactions between Digital Platform Operators and Consumers that Provide Personal Information, etc." to seek comments from the public (with comments due September 30, 2019).

In this seminar, Chairman Kazuyuki Sugimoto of the JFTC will make a keynote speech on the digital economy and competition policies in Japan. Chairman Sugimoto has actively engaged in competition policies in the digital economy and recently published "Competition Policy in Digital Era"(published by Nikkei Publishing Inc. (August 2019)). Following the keynote speech, J. Mark Gidley based in White & Case's Washington, DC office will discuss the latest trends on digital economy and competition law in the United States. Mr. Gidley chairs the White & Case Global Antitrust/Competition practice and previously served as the Acting Assistant Attorney General for the US Department of Justice (DOJ) Antitrust Division.
