White & Case counsel Katrin Helle and local partner Constantin Teetzmann have published an analysis of the EU AI Act and the European Commission’s proposed Digital Omnibus, sparking debate over whether these measures provide real relief or simply add to regulatory complexity. While the Omnibus aims to simplify rules and ease requirements for SMEs and start-ups, the core obligations for high-risk AI—such as strict risk management, data governance, and documentation—remain extensive. Non-compliance risks significant fines, and the timeline for key obligations may be delayed, but uncertainty remains over the readiness of harmonized standards. Helle and Teetzmann conclude that companies must proactively prepare for compliance as the regulatory landscape continues to develop.
