Global law firm White & Case LLP has expanded its ESG & Sustainability Practice with the addition of Stephen Shergold as a partner in London.

"The scope of environmental, social and governance regulation and required compliance continues to expand for our clients, as does the litigation risk they face from environmental and social impacts and the market pressure to invest in sustainable funds and assets," said White & Case partner Taylor Pullins, Head of the Firm's ESG & Sustainability Practice. "With the addition of Stephen, we are continuing to increase our environmental, social and governance expertise and capabilities so that we are best placed to support our clients as they respond to increasing demands from regulators, investors, business partners, consumers and other stakeholders."

Stephen advises on environmental law impacts, supply chain due diligence and human rights, risk management, compliance, stakeholder engagement and corporate sustainability strategy, tailored ESG policies and procedures and their operational implementation, environmental litigation and defence, and environmental and ESG regulatory due diligence for mergers and acquisitions. Stephen joins White & Case from Dentons, where he was a partner, chair of the ESG steering group committee and led the environment and societal team in the UK.

"Stephen is a highly ranked and recognised environmental specialist who can provide holistic and coordinated advice on the issues that affect and will continue to affect all our clients," said White & Case partner James Dodsworth, Regional Section Head EMEA M&A/Specialists. "His addition will ensure greater strength and depth in the London and EMEA environmental, social and governance team."

White & Case partner and Vice Chair Oliver Brettle said: "Demand for environmental, social and governance legal advice comes from across our mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, disputes, project development and finance, banking and other practices that rely on highly sophisticated environmental input, and in particular from our corporate, financial and private equity clients as they grapple with the complexities of compliance from a diverse and constantly expanding regulatory base. It is also particularly acute for international businesses that need to address the impacts of multiple jurisdictions implementing a varied suite of regulatory measures on different timetables. It is therefore a strategic imperative that we continue to invest in our environmental, social and governance capabilities and Stephen is an important part of that strategy."
