Biography

Michael is a partner in the Tax practice in White & Case's Washington DC office. He advises sponsors, developers, investors and lenders on tax incentives and related financing strategies for energy transition projects including solar, wind, storage, advanced manufacturing, carbon capture utilization and sequestration, green and blue hydrogen production, and clean fuel and SAF production projects.

Michael has extensive experience advising on tax incentives for energy projects under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 (including FEOC, material assistance, tax credit transfers, prevailing wage and apprenticeship compliance, domestic content and energy community adders), which includes a broad range of experience with partnership and corporate structures, mergers and acquisitions, capital raises, sales and transfers, and various other aspects of renewable energy and infrastructure projects.

Project Finance

  • Avantus on the development, US$500 million+ construction and tax equity bridge financing and US$300 million tax equity financing of the 200 MW / 500 MWh Aratina 1 solar and battery storage project in California.
  • Brookfield on the separate US$175 million and US$592 million construction and tax equity bridge financings for the 120 MW Pitt and 300 MW Cherry solar projects in North Carolina.
  • TotalEnergies on the tax equity financing and sale of investment tax credits for the 405 MW Hill, 325 MW Brazoria I, 49.9 MW Clinton and 49 MW Montpelier solar projects in Texas and Ohio.
  • Wabash Valley Resources on the development and US$1.56 billion DOE loan financing of a first-of-a-kind integrated blue ammonia fertilizer and carbon capture facility in Indiana, including 45V and 45Q tax credit qualification and monetization strategy.
  • Major US midstream company in the ongoing tax equity financing of a large-scale carbon capture and storage project at a natural gas processing plant in Texas, including 45Q tax credit qualification and monetization strategy.

  • Sponsor in the ongoing development of a large-scale carbon capture and sequestration project in the US, including 45Q tax credit qualification and monetization strategy.
  • Sponsor in the ongoing development of a large-scale renewable diesel and SAF biorefinery in the US, including 45V and 45Z tax credit qualification and monetization strategy.

M&A

  • TotalEnergies on its US$950 million sale to KKR of 50 percent interest in a 1.4 GW solar and distributed generation portfolio in North America, including a KKR equity investment and bank refinancing.
  • Brookfield on its strategic partnership with SunEnergy1 for the acquisition and construction of an 840 MW utility-scale solar portfolio in North Carolina and Virginia, including the potential to add new projects from an attractive 14 GW solar development pipeline.
