Biography

Based in the Geneva office of White & Case, Nikolas Hertel advises sovereign and private clients on a broad range of trade and commercial law matters, including regulatory compliance, commercial transactions, project management, and in complex disputes. Nikolas frequently advises on trade-related aspects of environmental measures and on supply chain constraints and due diligence, local content rules, energy transition, digital services, and emerging issues such as critical minerals, water, and AI. His work also includes advising clients on trade remedy investigations and anti-dumping and countervailing duties, market access, regional trade agreements, and World Trade Organization (WTO) law.

As a member of the Firm's Sports Practice, Nikolas also advises clients on the regulations of international sports federations and on regulatory requirements under EU law. Nikolas represents clients in arbitration proceedings, including before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and has reported on the case law of the Swiss Federal Tribunal concerning the arbitration chapter of the Swiss Private International Law Act (PILA).

Nikolas has strong expertise in Swiss law, EU law, international law, and comparative legal methodology, and has held research and teaching positions both at the University of Geneva and the University of Freiburg im Breisgau. At Harvard Law School, Nikolas was a visiting Ph.D. researcher in the Graduate program.

Prior to joining White & Case, Nikolas trained at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, where he worked in the lead ministry department for WTO and international trade.
