White & Case’s Hyder Jumabhoy: Private equity appetite for bank deals has changed

White & Case partner and Global Co-head of the Firm's Financial Institutions Industry Group & EMEA Co-head of the Financial Services M&A Practice, Hyder Jumabhoy, was recently quoted in PE Hub, discussing heightened activity in bank M&A and Private Equity's increasingly important role in it. Private equity firms could become even bigger players in the European banking sectors, though they will still face stiff competition from strategics.

As Hyder notes, "Traditionally, because there wasn't this huge volume of bank M&A, private equity was more attracted by other financial services verticals…that has changed." One big factor driving this increase in deal activity is the decrease in government ownership across Europe. Hyder notes, that many banks are also actively considering their positions on a rolling basis: "If you're not doing deals on the buy-side, you will likely be the subject of a deal on the sell-side."
