White & Case trains law faculty in Ukraine
Empowering the country's legal professionals
2 min read
From February through June 2025, White & Case conducted a lecture series for faculty members of the Law and Business Schools at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (KMA). Designed to introduce faculty to key concepts of international law and legal practice, the series also aimed to enhance subject-matter expertise and technical English proficiency for Ukrainian academics.
Ukraine looks ahead
The faculty lecture series focused on topics and legal frameworks that are expected to play a critical role in Ukraine's future. These included project finance and development, sustainable energy regulation, intellectual property protections to support innovation and economic growth, legal ethics, arbitration, and the role of pro bono in transitional justice.
Each session included a 45-minute presentation followed by Q&As. Preparatory materials introduced vocabulary and concepts. Topics were collaboratively selected for their relevance to Ukraine's long-term recovery, and in response to faculty interest.
Speakers included partner and general counsel Jennifer Paradise (NY), partners Ian Clark (London), Matt Drossos (Washington, DC), Olga Fedosova (Paris), Raj Gandesha (NY), Taylor Pullins (Houston), pro bono counsel Louis O'Neill (NY), assistant general counsel Anna Kachan (NY) and associate Caitlin Walczyk (Washington, DC).
Building bridges through law
"We were proud to participate and to support the work KMA is doing to prepare students and faculty for an evolving legal landscape," said Jennifer Paradise, who co-led a session on legal ethics alongside Anna Kachan, who herself is Ukrainian-American. "The questions from faculty showed deep thought about how legal systems shape society—something that's incredibly timely in Ukraine."
"This initiative not only gave us access to current thinking in global legal practice, but also a valuable professional development opportunity for our faculty," said Nataliia Maksymchuk of KMA Law School. "The opportunity to engage with international lawyers, particularly in English, created a truly enriching experience."
A foundation for future collaboration
Conversations are underway about future programming, including the continuation of a White & Case legal-writing tutoring program with KMA law students and further training opportunities for KMA faculty.
"Our collaboration with KMA has grown meaningfully in the past year," added Matt Drossos, who also works with Vis Moot teams in Ukraine. "This lecture series is just one more example of how we're using the skills of our global legal community to support long-term progress."
"This was more than just a lecture series—it was an investment in institutions," said Olga Fedosova, a Capital Markets partner who has worked on several innovative financing deals in the region. "The opportunity to engage with Ukrainian professors was deeply rewarding, and the level of insight they brought to the discussion speaks volumes about the country's talent."
