Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised a syndicate of leading financial institutions on a US$300 million debt issuance by Burford Capital Global Finance LLC, an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Burford Capital Limited, the leading global finance and asset management firm focused on law.
Burford used the proceeds from the debt issuance, along with a further US$100 million from cash on hand, to retire its April 2028 US$400 million debt maturity in full. Taken together, these actions reduce Burford's total debt outstanding by US$100 million, retire Burford's nearest debt maturity 19 months ahead of schedule and leave Burford with more than three years until its next debt maturity.
The transaction was part of Burford's publicly announced goal to de-lever over time, and deployed certain bespoke structuring elements to capture a more attractive coupon with a shorter-term issuance, which will also line up well with the April 2030 debt maturity.
The White & Case team was led by partner Jonathan Michels (New York) and included partners James Greene and Marcus Chaplin-Roberts (both in London) and associates Elizabeth Mapelli, Sarah Wetzel, Ashley Chana, Warda Yousuf (all in New York) and Bridget Alexander (London).
