In an interview with Bloomberg Law, White & Case’s Global Head of Mining & Metals Rebecca Campbell and partner Jason Rocha highlight how Big Law firms are actively expanding to meet a sharp increase in US critical minerals and rare earths work, even as client demand is outpacing the current supply of lawyers with deep sector-specific experience.
Campbell notes that there is now broad recognition across the United States as it has underinvested in its mining sector for over a generation. Against this backdrop, White & Case lawyers are seeing significantly increased interest from international investors, particularly from Japan and the Middle East, who are looking much more actively at opportunities to invest in US mining and critical minerals projects. Alongside Campbell and Rocha, partners Joel Rubinstein and Thomas Pate are advising on formative rare earths transactions, underscoring that White & Case is leading the charge in the rare earths sector with a dedicated team of partners focused on these matters.
Rocha explains that veteran mining practitioners in Texas are especially well positioned to support this wave of activity, given the technical synergies between mining and traditional oil and gas work. Many oil and gas lawyers are successfully transitioning into the mining and critical minerals space as firms pursue growing market opportunities and guide clients through complex permitting, environmental and litigation considerations that are central to developing US projects.
