White & Case advises Revera Energy on financing of 400MW / 800MWh Hunterston BESS

Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised Revera Energy on the successful non-recourse senior debt financing for the 400MW / 800MWh Hunterston Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Scotland.

White & Case represented Revera Energy, a global independent energy infrastructure platform backed by global investment firm Carlyle, as borrower's counsel on the non-recourse senior debt financing provided by Santander, Barclays, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and NatWest for the construction of the Hunterston BESS.

The project is strategically located in North Ayrshire, approximately 50km south-west of Glasgow, and north of the B6 boundary, one of the UK's most persistent power grid bottlenecks.

This transaction marks a significant milestone for Revera Energy's UK battery energy storage portfolio. Concurrently with financing, Revera issued notice to proceed, with construction commencing immediately and commercial operations expected in Q3 2028.

The Hunterston BESS is Revera's second UK transmission-connected battery storage project to reach financial close in 2026, following the 200MW / 400MWh Windyhill BESS, which is progressing well through construction and is on track for commercial operations in Q4 2027. Revera has up to a further 400MW / 1,600MWh of UK BESS capacity with approved planning consents, land rights, grid access and 15-year capacity market contracts, for which construction is proposed to commence over the coming months. At up to 1GW / 2.8GWh, Revera's UK BESS portfolio will become one of the largest battery storage platforms in Europe. It will support the UK's Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, enhance grid resilience and help alleviate a key transmission constraint separating wind generation in Scotland from electricity demand in England.
