Three White & Case lawyers were named "2016 MVPs" by legal publication Law360: Peter Carney (in the Competition category), J. Mark Gidley (Life Sciences) and Tallat Hussain (Environmental).
Editors from Law360 reviewed more than 1,000 submissions to determine who stood out from the pack as elite lawyers with successes in high-stakes litigation, record-breaking deals and complex global matters.
Carney (Washington, DC) is a litigator who represents domestic and foreign clients in complex litigation at all levels in federal and state courts and in government investigations and proceedings. His practice focuses on civil and criminal antitrust defense. In addition to defending clients in price-fixing cases brought in the United States by the Department of Justice Antitrust Division and the Federal Trade Commission, Carney routinely represents clients in cartel investigations brought by antitrust enforcers in a variety of non-US jurisdictions, including Europe, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Carney was a leading member of the Firm's antitrust teams that in 2016 won summary judgment for CertainTeed the Drywall Antitrust Litigation (E.D. Pa.), a Third Circuit affirmance of summary judgment for the Firm's client Allergan in the Doryx Antitrust Litigation on the hot issue of incremental innovation, often referred to as "product hopping," and a favorable ruling on client Allergan's motion to dismiss as to reverse payment claims in the Asacol antitrust Litigation (D. Ma.).
Gidley (Washington, DC) chairs the White & Case Global Antitrust/Competition practice. He focuses on mergers and acquisitions, cartel cases, class actions, and pharmaceutical antitrust cases. Gidley represents parties before the US competition agencies—the FTC and the Antitrust Division—as well as parties in criminal grand jury and civil investigations of pricing conduct and other potential antitrust violations. His work often features investigations of transnational firms in grand jury investigations, parallel class action suits, and civil investigations of pricing and other competitive practices. Gidley represents antitrust defendants in multi-forum cases involving parallel, simultaneous government investigations and multiple civil actions. Recent cases include representation of Allergan in the settlement of antitrust and fraud charges brought by the New York Attorney General, representation of Nexans in a victory in the DOJ Antitrust Division grand jury investigation, and representation as lead counsel for Warner Chilcott/Actavis in defending against claims of monopolization brought by Mylan.
