Project finance and infrastructure journal IJGlobal has honored White & Case by naming eight transactions on which the Firm worked in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa among its "Deals of the Year" for 2016 at its IJGlobal Awards 2016 ceremonies.

Latin America Transmission Deal of the Year
White & Case represented nine Chilean and international financial institutions as senior lenders and Prudential as initial note purchaser in the US Dollar and Chilean Peso long-term project financing for Transmisora Eléctrica del Norte S.A.’s 600-km electricity transmission line, which will unify Chile’s two main power grids. The project financing was led by partners Carlos Viana and Jeannine Acevedo. The White & Case team on the deal included Ian Cuillerier, Sean Johnson, Sean Goldstein, Ray Simon, Tom Bartlett, Tallat Hussain, Melinda Baglio, Elizabeth Martinez, Lucía Benabentos, Sean Williams, Raffaele Turco, Julio Peralta, Gerardo Otero, Alexandra Arizmendi and Nic Kennedy.
Latin America Solar Power Deal of the Year
White & Case represented SunPower Corp. on the project financing for SunPower’s 100 MW El Pelicano photovoltaic power facility in northern Chile. The facility will supply power to Santiago’s subway system, which will become the first public transportation system in the world to run mostly on solar energy. The White & Case team on the deal included Troy Alexander, Ian Cuillerier, Melinda Baglio, Fernando Noriega, Julia Bell and Elizabeth Martinez.

European Roads Deal of the Year
White & Case represented the Republic of Slovakia on its €1.5 billion R7/D4 procurement, involving the design, build, finance, maintain and operate (DBFMO) phases of new sections of the D4 motorway and the R7 expressway. The White & Case team on the deal included Caroline Miller Smith and Marek Staron.
African Mining Deal of the Year
White & Case represented BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, IFC, ING, Natixis, OPIC, Société Générale and two Guinean banks in the financing of Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée’s Sangaredi bauxite mine expansion in the Republic of Guinea. The financing is part of the largest foreign investment in Guinea in recent years, with a debt in the hundreds of millions of dollars committed for the mine expansion. The White & Case team on the deal included Rebecca Campbell and Peter Finlay.
MENA Power Deal of the Year
White & Case advised Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) on the greenfield development and financing of the 2,400 MW Hassyan Clean Coal Power Project, an independent power project, which was procured on a competitive basis along with transshipment and coal handling facilities in the Emirate of Dubai—the first of its kind in the region. The White & Case team on the deal included Antoine Cousin, Adam Pierson and Kirsti Massie.
MENA Midstream Oil & Gas Deal of the Year
White & Case represented a consortium of sponsors comprising Gulf Investment Corp., Samsung C&T Corp. and Teekay LNG Partners LP on a US$990 million project financing of the Bahrain LNG import terminal. The build, own, operate and transfer project will consist of a floating storage unit (FSU), an offshore LNG receiving jetty and breakwater and an onshore gas receiving and nitrogen production facility. The White & Case team on the deal included Matthew Wood, Antoine Cousin and Luke Robottom.
MENA Petrochemical Deal of the Year
White & Case advised six export credit agencies and a syndication of 19 international and regional banks on the development and financing for the US$6.4 billion Liwa Plastics Industries Complex in Oman, one of the region’s largest project financings in 2016, with US$3.8 billion committed senior debt, and the largest project financing in Oman to date. The White & Case team on the deal included Mark Castillo-Bernaus, Michael Watson, Matthew Wood, Sherief Rashed, Nneka Wood, Yasser Riad, Alex Malahias, Sara Al-Awadhi and Jennifer Shattock.
MENA Public Sector Financing Deal of the Year
White & Case represented the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority on the development of the Barakah nuclear power project in Abu Dhabi. This 5,600 MW project represents the UAE’s first nuclear energy project, and it is one of the largest such projects the world. The White & Case team on the deal included Michael Watson, Luke Robottom and Yasser Riad.
