Is nuclear power back on the energy agenda?
Authors: Andrew McDougall, Ximena Vasquez-Maignan, Peter Berg, Julien Bocobza, Martin Menski, Michael Yates
Nuclear power's comeback is being driven by ambitious climate goals, the need for energy security and the rise of artificial intelligence, which has led to skyrocketing demand for data centers. The advantages of nuclear power include reliability and efficient land use, making it a practical complement to renewable energy sources. But before nuclear is fully embraced, challenges related to its past safety issues, financing and regulation must be addressed.
Can sustainable aviation fuel get off the ground?
Authors: Kamran Ahmad, Peter Berg, Ryan Gawrych
As governments chase net zero targets, some are implementing regulations meant to boost the aviation industry's use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is made from renewable and waste-derived sources, like cooking oil. But SAF has yet to become commercially viable for airlines. It costs far more than conventional jet fuel, presents challenges for investors and is plagued by supply chain and output issues. Still, momentum behind SAF is building as more countries deploy mandates aimed at reducing aviation industry emissions.
Will sustainable data centres power the future?
Authors: James Johnson, Tim Fourteau, Stephen Shergold, Victoria Delacey, Lis Blunsdon
Amid dramatic global growth in the number and size of power-hungry data centers, concerns about their environmental impact have become a priority. Governments, policymakers and data center operators themselves are focused on making this critical infrastructure sustainable and ensuring that data centers do not detract from efforts to reach net zero. In addition to offering environmental benefits, sustainable data centers may be a boon to investors, who could benefit from the centers' short construction cycle and ability to quickly generate cash.
