White & Case advises Gunvor on APAC power platform expansion through data centre supply agreement

Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised Gunvor on its continued expansion into the Asia-Pacific power market through a long-term electricity supply agreement with Firmus to support data centre developments in South Australia.
"This is a landmark transaction for Australia's rapidly growing data centre sector and an example of how a bespoke contracting solution can deliver low-cost, firm renewable energy to the customer whilst helping to build social license for the data centre industry" said White & Case partner Ged Cochrane, who co-led the Firm's deal team.
Under the electricity supply agreement with Firmus, Gunvor will provide 600 MW of firm power for 12 years. The transaction is a key component of Gunvor's expanding APAC power platform and trading strategy and reflects a continuing shift towards load following offtake arrangements from renewable generation firmed by BESS.
White & Case partner Paul Marshall, who co-led the Firm's deal team, said: "This transaction reflects the increasing sophistication of Australia's power market. Trading houses, developers and storage providers are now working together to deliver firming solutions backed by renewable generation - supporting energy-intensive assets like data centres."
The transaction has attracted significant interest, with a recent announcement attended by the South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, and the Minister for State Development, Chris Picton. It is expected to help drive the continued expansion of renewable energy generation and storage in South Australia through commitments to support 1200 MW of new generation capacity and 1500 MWh of battery storage capacity.
The White & Case team in Melbourne which advised on the transaction was co-led by partners Ged Cochrane and Paul Marshall, with support from senior associates Barnaby Matthews and Hannah Bragg.
