Global law firm White & Case LLP has strengthened its Global Mergers & Acquisitions Practice with the additions in Johannesburg of Gary Felthun as a partner, and Craig Atkinson as a local partner.
"White & Case has been a leading adviser on African matters for more than 40 years, with an on-the-ground presence in South Africa for more than 20 years," said White & Case partner John Reiss, Head of the Global Mergers & Acquisitions Practice. "The strategic addition of Gary and Craig enhances our M&A offering in and out of Africa, and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to serving our international clients across Africa and further strengthening our long-established Johannesburg office."
Felthun, who joins the Firm's Global Mergers & Acquisitions Practice, is focused on mergers and acquisitions and private equity. He advises a range of listed and private clients, including prominent mining organisations, corporates and private equity firms, on both international and domestic transactions, and in recent years has acted on many of the leading and most high profile mining, private equity and healthcare deals involving South Africa. Felthun joins White & Case from one of Africa's largest law firms, ENSafrica, where he was head of one of the largest teams in the corporate/commercial department and a director (the ENSafrica equivalent to partner) from 2010, and brings more than 14 years of experience.
Atkinson, who also joins the Firm's Global Mergers & Acquisitions Practice, has a broad practice focused primarily on private equity, resources, mining and telecommunications. He advises listed and private corporate clients as well as local and international investment banks on mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganisations, restructurings, takeovers, corporate finance, capital raisings, black economic empowerment transactions and listings. Atkinson joins from ENSafrica, where he was a director from 2013, and has more than ten years of experience.
"Gary and Craig bring practices with exciting synergies with our ambition to continue growing our leading global M&A capability in mining and metals, and building a leading pan-African M&A practice," said White & Case partner Allan Taylor, Regional Section Head, EMEA M&A/Corporate. "As prominent lawyers in South Africa with strong market reputations and excellent client relationships, they are both great additions to our global team."
Oliver Brettle, a member of the White & Case Executive Committee, said: "Our 2020 strategy includes a focus on profitable growth in M&A and in the global private equity industry. The arrival of Gary and Craig represents further progress in both areas, and their experience in mining and metals aligns with another core strength of White & Case. Our ability to drive these areas at the top level across our offices is fundamental to our Firm."
White & Case was the first foreign law firm to establish a presence in South Africa when its Johannesburg office opened in 1995. The Firm also serves clients in Africa from offices in London, Paris, Washington, DC, Beijing, Sao Paulo and the United Arab Emirates, with strength in French-, Portuguese- and English-speaking jurisdictions and capabilities and experience across project finance, capital markets, construction, dispute resolution and mergers and acquisitions in a variety of sectors including oil and gas, mining and metals, power, infrastructure and telecoms.
