White & Case partner Raoul Cantero of the Firm's Miami office was named one of three "Most Effective Lawyers 2012" in the Appellate category in Florida publication Daily Business Review's eighth annual special report "Most Effective Lawyers 2012."
Cantero was selected for his work in an appeals case involving client QBE Insurance Corp. A condo association had sued QBE over its treatment of a claim arising out of damage caused by a 2005 hurricane. On an appeal of a jury verdict of US$7.2 million for the condo association, Florida's highest court, the Florida Supreme Court, returned the case to the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, which reversed the US$7.2 million judgment against QBE and ordered a new trial.
Previously, Cantero won an appellate matter for South Florida Racing Association, owner of Hialeah Park, which wanted to operate slot machines at the state track. The Florida legislature enacted legislation allowing the Hialeah Park to qualify to do so, but its competitors sued. They lost their challenge in trial court and again in Florida's First District Court of Appeal.
