White & Case won the 2013 Impact Award from TrustLaw, the pro bono referral arm of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, together with Chilean law firm Grasty Quintana Majlis & Cia and Filipino anti-slavery organization Visayan Forum Foundation, for researching policies and legislation related to the protection of domestic workers. Visayan Forum used the research to negotiate for landmark legislation in the Philippines—the Magna Carta for Domestic Workers—which was passed in February 2013. It provides protection and welfare to around two million domestic workers in the Philippines.
The Impact Award recognizes the projects that help change laws, support NGOs and social enterprises to reach more individuals and have a significant impact.
Lawyers in six White & Case offices—Istanbul, Johannesburg, London, Milan and Singapore—reviewed laws and regulations in eight countries relating to the regulation of domestic work and enforcement of applicable standards to assess compliance with the ILO Convention 189: Decent Work for Domestic Workers. The research will inform efforts to support the ratification process in the countries studied.
